Removals to Portugal.
The furthest of the four and the one that has changed most. It used to mean retirement to the Algarve; now a large share of it is people moving to Lisbon or Porto to work, and they are considerably younger.
The NIF comes first
Before anything else. The Portuguese tax number is needed for the import entry and for essentially every other transaction in the country — renting, buying, a utility account. Without it the paperwork stops and your belongings wait somewhere they are not needed.
Household goods move as baggagem, a personal-effects import tied to a change of residence. It carries relief where the conditions are met, supported by a certificate of residence and an inventory that matches the load.
The journey, honestly described
There is no direct route from the Channel. Your belongings cross to France, run south past Bordeaux, cross the Pyrenees, traverse Spain, and then enter Portugal — and which Spanish route depends entirely on whether you are going to Porto, Lisbon or the Algarve.
It is the longest of the four routes we run, and the transit window reflects that. We would rather tell you so at the quote than have you watching a tracker.
Where people are going now
Lisbon
The growth destination and the hardest to deliver into. The older central districts have narrow streets, real gradients, and buildings where the only way furniture goes in is through a window on a hoist.
The Algarve
Still the largest by volume and much the most predictable — with the usual exception of hillside villas on steep private drives.
Porto, the Silver Coast and the interior
Porto has an old centre as constrained as Lisbon's and a hinterland that is not constrained at all. Further north and inland — Nazaré, Óbidos, Tomar, Coimbra — means more land, more renovation projects, and rural tracks that decide the final vehicle.
The damp question
This is the piece of advice most specific to Portugal and the one most often skipped. Houses that have stood empty, particularly older stone properties and anywhere near the coast, hold a surprising amount of moisture.
Unloading sofas, mattresses, rugs and wooden furniture straight into one is how people discover mould a fortnight later. Open it up and air it properly for as long as you can before delivery day — and if that is not possible, tell us and we will hold the load.

Why does everything go through Spain?
Because there is no realistic direct route from the Channel. A Portuguese move is a French run, then a Spanish transit, then a final leg — which is why it is the longest of the four and why the transit window is wider. We would rather say that plainly than imply it is a hop.
Is Lisbon as steep as people say?
Yes, and it genuinely affects the work. Alfama and Bairro Alto have narrow streets, severe gradients and buildings where the stairwell will not take furniture — hoists are common. Tell us the district and the floor and it is planned rather than discovered on the day.
The house has been shut up for months. Does that matter?
It can, and this is the Portugal-specific thing worth knowing. Houses that stand empty get damp, and unloading soft furnishings and wooden furniture straight into one invites trouble. Air it properly before delivery day, or let us hold the load briefly while you do.
